SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar)

 

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems are special types of Radar producing high resolution images (comparable to optical sensors) in all weather conditions, night and day. SAR systems utilize sophisticated signal processing and image processing algorithms and use very complicated radar electronics and processing units. Requirements specifications, design and testing of such systems are very complicated and costly.

SDT’s SARSim tool is a reliable solution to alleviate such costs and complexity. This tool provides mechanisms for testing several system parameters in virtually any environment and conditions. Scenario based structure of SARSim lets user to define DTED and DEM maps as the terrain and 3D models as stationary or moving targets.

With sophisticated environment simulation and electromagnetic propagation and scattering calculations SAR/Radar raw data, which is very valuable for testing and monitoring the performance of the system, is generated. Special data observation tools of the SARSim make it possible to observe and log data at any stage from electromagnetic backscattering to synthesized image. Those observed and generated data can be fed into a real system to test a specific part of the system. On the other hand, if testing of a subsystem is needed, such as radar electronics or a specific part of signal processing system, with the help of SARSim’s capability of processing generated raw SAR data or real raw SAR data which is obtained from real airborne and space-borne SAR systems. Input/output of that subsystem can be fed into SARSim and the result produced by SARSim can be used for evaluation of the performance.
